Costa Rica Luxury Tax – Solidarity Tax late payments

Solidarity Tax late paymentsThe Directorate General of Taxation will begin to notify owners of luxury homes who did not pay the solidarity tax next week.

The Deputy Minister of Finance, reported yesterday that they will begin with taxpayers who must pay more.

CEO of Taxation Fonseca explained that approximately 10,000 homeowners must pay this tribute. There are 500 contributors that cover 70% of the collection of the solidarity tax. Therefore, the Directorate of General Taxation will begin to give notice to 500 homeowners. They hope to finish the process in May.

10 Days to File

The Deputy Minister explained that the notice will inform the homeowners who are delinquent. They will be are urged to pay their taxes. The debtor has 10 days to file and may request an extension of five days. A debtor that after this requirement does not pay will start a forced compliance stage.

At this stage, there is an appraisal of the property. Then follows a process of adjustment. And if it still is not canceled, charges will be performed.

The solidarity tax rules from the 1st of October 2009. Payment of the last quarter of 2009 and 2010 period was 15 January. So far they have raised ¢ 3,200 million, said Deputy Minister Rodriguez.

This newly established Solidarity tax must be paid by all persons or companies who own, co-owners, beneficial owners or possessors of real property for residential use worth more than ¢ 100 million.
